How to Choose the BEST Clothes for Hyperhidrosis

How to Choose the BEST Clothes for Hyperhidrosis

This is what I wish I knew as someone with hyperhidrosis. So I hope this information helps YOU.

There's two main factors in choosing the best clothes for excessive sweating.

Firstly, the fabric composition. This makes a huge difference in sweat absorption and temperature regulation (very important in clothing for hyperhidrosis).

Generally, wearing synthetic material will feel hot because there’s minimal breathability to it. These include materials such as polyester and nylon. Heat and moisture get trapped between your skin and the material, which can lead to increased sweating as your body temperature rises. This is not ideal for hyperhidrosis, as we want the moisture and heat to disappear, allowing our bodies to cool down.

I will say there are some mesh or “sweat-wicking” performance-focused activewear that exists, with the purpose of temperature regulation. But as someone with excessive sweating, I’ve never found these types of activewear to benefit me. I have a polyester activewear shirt from Patagonia that’s "Capilene Cool-Dry" and I feel way more hot wearing it than if I just wore a cotton t-shirt.

Alternatively, natural and even semi-natural material makes a huge difference in temperature regulation and feel cooler to wear because they are breathable. Some examples of these natural and semi-natural materials that I personally love include; cotton, silk, Tencel, and viscose. Heat and sweat won’t stay trapped because they will be absorbed into the material and can then evaporate easily. This is what you’re looking for in clothes for hyperhidrosis.

However, a note on cotton: if it's thick, it will stay wet for a while. So depending on what you're wearing it for, cotton isn't always quick drying.

Secondly, the print design. This includes;

a) the style of the design, and

b) the scale of it.

a) Print design styles that have diverse colours, gradients, and motifs are best at hiding sweat. If the design is plain or has too many block colours, then sweat will show easily on the clothing, as the fabric gets darker when wet and will leave an obvious outline.

The density of the print is what makes or breaks it as sweat proof and the perfect clothing choice for excessive sweating (or not).

b) The scale of the print design can also determine what clothes are best for hyperhidrosis. If the scale is too large, then it won’t matter if it’s a dense or diverse print because it’ll end up with block colours anyway.

But if the scale is average or on the smaller side, then sweat marks can camouflage better in the print.
